Love
of people, excitement defines Casino Floor
Attendant Angie Hartshorn, 27, make no bones about
it: the life of a Casino Floor Attendant is right up her alley.
Outgoing by nature, Hartshorn said she relishes her contact with a wide variety
of people and the excitement of the Prairie Meadows. "I
left TFI because I wanted to expand myself," Hartshorn said. "I had worked my way up as high as a could go at TFI. I was looking for opportunities
for personal growth."
Hartshorn said she also is a night person, so the hours offered by this job
- typically 4 p.m. to 12:30 p.m. - were perfect for her. Her job entails paying
out jackpots, filling the slot machines (called hopper fills), and assisting
customers with service. "We provide whatever they need," she said. "If they want change, if they have a question
about how a machine works, or if they just want someone to watch the machine
for them, we do that."
Hartshorn said skills necessary to be a successful in this job include strong
communication skills, being trustworthy, being comfortable working with money,
having a good head for figures, being outgoing, and knowing how to be conversational. "This is a very past-paced job," she said. "You
are on your feet a lot; there's no sitting down. I love it. I enjoy the hectic
place. It makes the hours go by fast." Hartshorn and her co-workers -
some 30-40 people per shift - touch literally thousands of people each day she
said. Besides the traditional benefits offered by Prairie Meadows - such as
health, dental and vision insurance and a 401K plan, Hartshorn added that "almost
everyone loses weight when they take this job."
Hartshorn said her customer philosophy is simple - provide the best service
possible. Training for the job takes a total of about three weeks, she said,
and is a combination of classroom and job shadowing. Another side advantage
is the wide range of people she works with, too. She said many of her co-workers
are female - although there are many men working at the Casino - and they range
in age from 19 to 60. An entry-level Casino Floor Attendant makes $8 an hour,
she said.
